Sailor's Delight
2019
Pet-Nat
This is Moi Wine’s version of a Pet-Nat or "Petillent Naturel" which is French for "naturally sparkling".
The name "Sailor's Delight" comes from the age old adage:
"Pink sky at night, sailors' delight.
Pink sky in the morning, sailors' take warning"
When we see a pink or red sky at night it means we are witnessing the setting sun sending light through a high concentration of dust particles. This traditionally indicates high pressure and stable air coming in from the west. Essentially good weather will follow, and hence good news for sailors.
This pet-nat is vibrant, pinky/red and cloudy, under high pressure and brings good news from the west of the City of Sails - Auckland, New Zealand ... the name seemed very fitting.
It's vibrant colour is telling of it's strictly red grape variety heritage. This was made from exactly the same juice as the 2019 Filigree Rosé - a field blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc Syrah and a soupçon of Malbec the field blend of grape varieties gives this Rosé an abundance of aromatic depth. With 10% of this wine fermented in an old oak barrel creating a viscous mid-palate texture, whilst the stainless steel component retains the vibrant red berry fruit aromas. The ferment was allowed to finish off it's final phase of ferment in the bottle resulting in a crisp, dry wine with generous berry fruit flavours and a satisfying sparkle.
The bottles have not been disgorged and instead have been allowed to each evolve individually of each other. Whilst the wine is very similar, every bottle has it's own unique character as the yeast lees continue to go through autolysis and develop.
Only 144 bottles of Pet-Nat were produced in 2019 all of which were sold out in a few months.
